This year Car-Fi was chosen as one of only 21 Pioneer dealers across the United States to compete in the 2008 Pioneer Build-Off. The car we picked to use for this project was one of the most difficult vehicles to do a competition sound system in, a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette. Pioneer supplied participating retailers with the following Premier audio components:
- DEH-P800PRS - Single CD player
- PRS-A900 – A 4-channel amplifier
- PRS-D1200SPL - Class D mono amplifier
- TS-C720PRS - 6.75-inch component speakers
- TS-W3001D4 - 12-inch Pro Series subwoofer
Dealers were required to install the supplied components into their choice of demo vehicle in six weeks. Additional Pioneer product could be used in addition to this selected gear. The vehicles were gathered in San Diego April 19 at Pioneer’s Mobile Business Group’s annual Road Show where the IASCA Pro Class criteria were used to judge the vehicles.
The finished project turned out to be one of the most impressive vehicles Car-Fi has built to date. The build sounded incredible and the custom installation was jaw-dropping. Unfortunately, we missed getting in the top 3 spots by only 24 points. If our Competition Presentation manual would have been more detailed, we would have got 3rd place (they docked us 30 points on it). Our Corvette came in 6th. A 1999 Mercedes CLK by Sound Sensations from Marietta, Georgia was declared the champion. They got third place last year with this vehicle so they left the install basically the same and just just changed the equipment. The majority of the competitors started fresh like us and did the complete build in six weeks. The 2008 FJ Cruiser by Cartronics (Santa Rosa, Calif.) took second place followed by the 2007 Honda Element by The Specialists (Tucson, Ariz.) in third place.
